{"id":2530,"date":"2020-05-11T20:20:35","date_gmt":"2020-05-11T10:20:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dying-and-death-reflections.com\/?page_id=2530"},"modified":"2020-05-11T20:20:38","modified_gmt":"2020-05-11T10:20:38","slug":"meditation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dying-and-death-reflections.com\/index.php\/meditation\/","title":{"rendered":"Meditation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Meditation: Gaining Familiarity with the Nature of Mind<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5>(1) <em>Shamatha<\/em> meditation \u2013 calming the mind<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Tranquility meditation. Its aspects are <em>mindfulness<\/em> (recollection of the object of meditation) and <em>alertness<\/em> (continuity of mindfulness). <em>Shama<\/em> means \u201ccalm,\u201d and <em>tha<\/em> is \u201cabiding\u201d: so <em>shamatha<\/em> means \u201ccalm abiding.\u201d It is thus called since distraction towards objects such as form and so on has been calmed, and the mind abides one-pointedly in whichever samadhi one is practicing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5>(2) <em>Vipashyana<\/em> meditation \u2013 insight meditation<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Meditation which develops insight into the nature of reality. <em>Vipashyana<\/em> is practiced on the basis of <em>shamatha<\/em> meditation. In the word <em>vi<\/em> (<em>shesha<\/em>) pashyan\u0101, <em>vishesha<\/em> means \u201cspecial\u201d or \u201csuperior,\u201d and <em>pashyana<\/em> means \u201cseeing\u201d or \u201cobserving\u201d: so <em>vi<\/em>(<em>shesha<\/em>)<em>pashyana<\/em> means \u201csuperior seeing.\u201d It is thus called since one sees \u201cthe superior\u201d\u2014that is, the nature of phenomena\u2014with the eye of wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5>(3) <em>Dzogchen<\/em> meditation \u2013 understanding the innermost nature of mind<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Great Perfection\u201d. The tradition of meditation emphasizing the mind\u2019s primordial purity and the methods for realizing it. This meditation is the pinnacle practice within the Nyingma lineage. It is taught to be the most advanced of all forms of meditation practice. In Tibet, these teachings were widely spread by Padmasambhava, and they encompass the present instructions on dying and the cycle of the six bardos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5>(4) <em>Bardo of meditation<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The interval in which one\u2019s mind is resting in a state of meditative absorption, or <em>samadhi<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5>(5) <em>Creation<\/em> stage<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the first of the two major types of meditation in the Vajrayana (the second being the <em>completion<\/em> stage), which focuses on the visualization of meditational deities in order to become familiar with and realize the union of appearance and emptiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5>(6) <em>Completion<\/em> stage<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the second of the two major types of meditation in the Vajrayana (the first being the <em>creation<\/em> stage), which consists of gradually refining <em>nadi<\/em>, <em>prana<\/em>, and <em>bindu<\/em>, and culminates in the increasingly nonreferential meditations of Mahamudra and Dzogchen. Through such practices, one becomes familiar with and realizes the union of clarity and emptiness, bliss and emptiness, and awareness and emptiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5><strong>(7) <em>Deity yoga<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Meditation practice involving the visualization of deities; a skillful method for connecting with the wisdoms embodied by deities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5>(8) <em>Mahamudra<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGreat Seal\u201d. A tradition of profound methods of meditation based on direct realization of the mind\u2019s true nature. This is the highest meditation practice within the Kagyu, Sakya, and Geluk lineages of Tibetan Buddhism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5>(9) <em>Samadhi<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>A state of undistracted meditative absorption or meditative concentration.
