The Pandemic as a Catalyst for Transformation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

COVID 19 \/ cooperatively redesigning the human impact on\nEarth<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s make this\nthe catalyst for the re-design and regeneration of the human impact on Earth \u2014\nwe can heal the Earth and her people, regenerate ecosystems everywhere,\nregenerate our cooperative nature, and build renewed social cohesion through\ncommunity solidarity \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the\ntime to accept that change is no longer an option but now forced on us at a\nscale that the current economic system will AND SHOULD NOT recover from!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The time to\n(re)create vibrant bioregional economies that incentivise ecosystems\nregeneration and a re-regionalisation of production and consumption is here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time to\nswitch to Game B \u2014 a globally cooperative humanity worth its name \u2026 united in\nthe commitment to create conditions conducive to life and redesign the human\nimpact on the planet from exploitative and degenerative to healing and\nregenerative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, this\npandemic is upon us and the stock markets are collapsing, production, air\ntravel, air pollution, \u2026 are dropping \u2026 recent predictions based on a model\nby researchers of the Universities of Based and Stockholm suggest\nthat even with a summer dip in the rate of increase the COVID-19 virus could\ninfect 100 million people (at a time) by Winter 2020\/21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s not\nplan for return to business as usual after this \u2014 the climate emergency and\nobscene levels of in equality within and between countries clearly indicate\nthat BAU (Business As Usual) was not working and heading for imminent collapse\nand synchronous failure anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are now\npushed to a global mobilisation of resources and civic participation that the\nplanet has not seen before. Let us not waste time by pretending that what we\nhad before was working or is worth returning to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are\nsome of the measures that communities, cities and regions will have to have to\nbegin to explore anyway?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do we\nfeed our population at the bioregional scale from food grown mainly regionally?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to we\nprovide energy from regional renewable resources as oil production and oil\nprices force us out of fossil fuels (for good)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to we\nswitch to regional transport systems that are not dependent on expensive\nimports of fuel?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short, we\nneed to redesign for community and regional resilience to a turbulent economic\nfuture, while increasing food, water energy sovereignty at those scales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This kind of\nresilience building was needed in any case as a global preparation for a\nworsening climate crisis, and to avoid cataclysmic runaway climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scale of\ncollaboration needed for the response to climate change seemed impossible to\ncatalyse in the time we had left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now COVID 19\nis forcing us to mobilise in unprecedented ways and we are doing so as one\nglobal species facing a calamity that we can only solve collaboratively and\ntogether \u2014 for all equally \u2014 or we will not solve it at all! Does that\nsound familiar? The same holds for climate change!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

COVID 19\nmight become the catalyst for the transformation of the human presence and\nimpact on Earth that climate change should have been but was too diffuse of a\nthread for our species to come together around in an effective way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now that we\nare and have to achieve this, let us make the most of the effort and resources\nspent!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world\nwill never be the same and that can be a good thing too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Already the\nlives saved by dropping air pollution in China alone might soon begin to\nout-number the tragic and catastrophic loss of lives that the viral pandemic is\nand will continue to cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With\nsuffering and loss at that scale it is inappropriate to draw comparisons, and\ncomparing numbers does not reduce the suffering for those affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCorona\nvirus lockdown may save more lives by preventing pollution than by preventing\ninfection\u201d (Jeff McMahon, 2020).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if the\nviral death tall ends up being much larger than currently estimated, it will\nremain a fraction of the death toll caused by the systemic dysfunctionalities\nof our current system and expected to be caused by the kind of climate change\nand ecosystems collapse scenarios we were heading for in the short to mid-term\nin any case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase shift\nis here! We will surprise ourselves with our capacity to collaborate across\nboards as one global species!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s make\nour efforts count and design for human and planetary health, as we build a new\nfuture together based on diverse regenerative cultures everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diverse\nbioregional economies supporting cultures that heal their local rivers,\nregenerate forests, grasslands, soils, wetlands and oceans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cultures\nthat are elegantly adapted to the bio-cultural uniqueness of the bioregions, we\nnow have the opportunity to re-inhabit as healers and in a globally\ncollaborative way!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
