{"id":2071,"date":"2020-03-10T10:54:27","date_gmt":"2020-03-10T00:54:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dying-and-death-reflections.com\/?page_id=2071"},"modified":"2020-03-14T11:40:08","modified_gmt":"2020-03-14T01:40:08","slug":"aging-changing-dying","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dying-and-death-reflections.com\/index.php\/aging-changing-dying\/","title":{"rendered":"Aging, Changing, Dying"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center\">Insights from Ram Dass<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now in my seventies, the following comments in relation to\nRam Dass\u2019s book, <em>Still Here: Embracing Aging, Changing, and Dying<\/em>, have\ntaken on new interest and meaning for me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[Ram] Dass delves into the aspects of aging that terrify\nmost of us \u2013 and affirms there is an awareness in each of us that transcends\nall the attributes that necessarily diminish with age. Ram Dass shows readers\nof all ages that it is possible to stay present in the midst of suffering, to\nbe still and know that God is here now.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u2014Publishers Weekly<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRam Dass has entered the often stormy relationship between\nour physical and spiritual sides, and he has lived to tell about it. This is no\ngussied up, glossed over personal account of illness, but an honest, courageous\nbook that flows from the soul. Listen up, everybody, while Ram Dass tells it\nlike it is.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014Larry Dossey, M.D., author of <em>Reinventing Medicine<\/em>\nand <em>Healing Words<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cStill Here<\/em> encourages acceptance of aging and dying\nin a culture with a pervasive fear of both. It speaks to many of the core fears\nabout growing old, including senility and loneliness, and suggests facing them\nby turning both inward (through meditation) and outward (to old friends and\nnew).\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014<em>New Age<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAn honest and engaging book that aging boomers should be\nable to relate to. With personal stories and his trademark humor, Dass guides\nhis readers through the demons of aging (senility, loneliness, embarrassment,\npowerlessness, loss of role, depression and fear), and how to keep them in\nperspective.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u2014Rocky Mountain News<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting old isn\u2019t easy for a lot of us. Neither is living,\nneither is dying. We struggle against the inevitable and we all suffer because\nof it. We have to find another way to look at the whole process of being born,\ngrowing old, changing, and dying, some kind of perspective that might allow us\nto deal with what we perceive as big obstacles without having to be dragged\nthrough the drama. It really helps to understand that we have something\u2014that we\n<em>are<\/em> something\u2014which is unchangeable, beautiful, completely aware, and\ncontinues no matter what. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing this doesn\u2019t solve everything\u2014this is what I\nencountered and told about in <em>Be Here Now<\/em>, and I\u2019ve still had my share\nof suffering. But the perspective of the soul can help a lot with the little\nthings, and it is my hope that you\u2019ll be able to take from this book some joy\nin being \u201cstill here.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u2014<em>Ram Dass<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than thirty years ago, an entire generation sought a\nnew way of life, looking for fulfillment and meaning in a way no one had\nbefore.
