LAM RIM: Graduated Path to Enlightenment \u2013 commentaries by Geshe Tenzin Zopa<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This book consists of commentaries by Geshe Tenzin Zopa. It features Lama Tsongkhapa\u2019s \u201cFoundation of All Good Qualities\u201d and the \u201cLam Rim Chenmo\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the book is a concluding message from Geshe\nTenzin Zopa. He states: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe motivation for doing the Outline in this way [as it is\npresented in this book] is not only to let the reader have a full overview of\nthe Buddha\u2019s teachings but also to feel encouraged; that it is possible to\npractice the Path in a systematic and complete manner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, you may find that despite the outline and the short\ncommentary, many things may still seem unclear to you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, for a deeper understanding of the teachings, I\nurge the reader to read and study the actual Lam Rim Chenmo<\/em> \u2013 it will\ninspire you to treasure, to practice, and to uphold the Lam Rim. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whilst studying the Lam Rim Chenmo, it is always good to\nintegrate it with the lojong<\/em> (mind training) teachings and to apply them\ninto one\u2019s daily life. Only then will you be able to taste and truly enjoy the\nDharma. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right now, one may not enjoy it as much because the\nteachings are not yet experiential and that is due to one not applying them in\neverything one does. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regard the Lam Rim and Lojong as one\u2019s right and left hand\nrespectively and there will be no doubt of success in your spiritual\ncultivation\u201d. [Lightly edited for the purpose of this website.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lamrim \u2013 an Abbreviated and Annotated Outline<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A commonly used outline for Lamrim teachings today is that\nof Liberation in the Palm of your Hand<\/em> by Pabongka Rinpoche (an English\ntranslation from Tibetan). In this one-page handout, an abbreviated and\nannotated outline is given to show the structure of this Lamrim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Practicing the Path<\/strong> \u2013 by Yangsi Rinpoche<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A compilation of notes (eight pages) based on Yangsi\nRinpoche\u2019s book, Practicing the Path: A Commentary on the Lamrim Chenmo<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lamrim Meditation Outline<\/strong> \u2013 by Ven. Thubten Chodron<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In this two-page handout, Lamrim meditations are listed\nbased on Ven. Thubten Chodron\u2019s book Guided Buddhist Meditations: Essential\nPractices on the Stages of the Path.<\/em> The listing appears in three\ncategories: (1) The Path in Common with the Initial Level Practitioner; (2) The\nPath in Common with the Middle Level Practitioner; and (3)The Path of\nthe Advanced Practitioner.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lamrim Meditations \u2013 by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In this one-page handout, 21 Lamrim meditations are listed which may be practiced in a three-week cycle as a daily meditation practice. This listing is based on Geshe Kelsang Gyatso\u2019s <\/a>book, The New Meditation Handbook: Meditations to Make our Life Happy and Meaningful <\/em>(Tharpa Publications, 2003).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lamrim \u2013 an Abbreviated Outline in Table Form<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This abbreviated\nand annotated Lamrim outline, in the form of a\ntable, is again based on the English\ntranslation from Tibetan of Liberation in the Palm of your Hand<\/em> by\nPabongka Rinpoche. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lam-Rim Outlines: Beginners\u2019 Meditation Guide<\/strong> \u2013 compiled by Karin Valham<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Preface states the following: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis meditation manual is an introduction to meditations on\nthe Graduated Path to Full Awakening, and is compiled from different sources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It covers the Three Scopes in brief, starting with the Small\nScope<\/em><\/strong> of taking an active interest in avoiding a lower, suffering\nrebirth in the future, and gaining a happy rebirth as a human or a god. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is achieved by recognizing that a precious human life\nhas the full potential for this and even much more. Yet, the present life will\nnot last forever and one must die. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contemplating the possibility of falling into a lower realm\nof rebirth motivates one to seek a definite solution to this problem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha (who\nprovide the infallible inner method for overcoming suffering forever) gives\nlife and death a safe and sound direction. The first advice is to live one\u2019s\nlife in harmony with the law of cause and effect, that is, to avoid non-virtue\nand practice virtue as much as one can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Medium Scope<\/em><\/strong> is the next step and focuses\non generating the state of mind in which one takes an active interest in\nbecoming free from the whole of cyclic existence \u2013 uncontrolled rebirth due to\nthe force of delusion and karma. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is achieved by contemplating in general, all the\nsufferings in cyclic existence, and especially the sufferings of the higher\nrebirths of celestial beings and humans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, familiarizing oneself with the path that leads to\nliberation, one contemplates the causes of cyclic existence \u2013 the delusions,\nand how delusions arise \u2013 and then how to diligently apply their antidotes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With mindfulness and awareness of one\u2019s mental attitudes,\none learns to become skillful in reducing negative actions of body, speech and\nmind, and eventually to overcome them altogether. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Great Scope<\/em><\/strong> is the wish and the will to\nattain the state of full enlightenment in order to free all living beings from\nsuffering and to lead them to the fulfillment of their highest potential,\nenlightenment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To accomplish this extraordinary and most beautiful thought,\nfirst of all one needs a levelled mind, an even attitude towards others, in\nother words, equanimity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, on top of that, like building a magnificent house, one\ntrains one\u2019s mind in the seven-fold cause and effect instructions and in\nexchanging oneself for others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Lama Yeshe used to say: Bodhicitta is the intoxicant that numbs us against pain and fills us with bliss. Bodhicitta is the alchemy that transforms every action into benefit for others. Bodhicitta is the cloud that carries the rain of positive energy to nourish growing things. A pure bodhicitta motivation, even if it is created with effort, will make one\u2019s practices of calm-abiding and analytical meditation on emptiness a cause for enlightenment especially when dedicated single-pointedly, solely for this purpose.\u201d [Lightly edited for the purpose of this website.] <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflection:
At the time of death everything but the teaching is useless. No matter how great the affection that my circle of loved ones has for me, I cannot take a single one of them with me. No matter how large a collection of lovely belongings I have, I cannot bring the tiniest portion of it with me. I must even be separated from the very flesh and bones I was born with. Therefore what purpose does attachment to the good things of this life serve? The Lord of Death is sure to come but it is unsure when that will occur. Since I run the risk of dying this very day, truly I must do something to prepare for death. By way of preparation, may I practice the teaching purely, free of attachment to any of this life\u2019s excellence!
